why does the distributive law not hold for complex numbers?

simplify((3+4*i)*x+(4-3*i)*y) [enter] (3+4*i)*x+(4-3*i)*y

but

simplify((3+4*j)*x+(4-3*j)*y) [enter] 4*j*x - 3*j*y + 3*x+4*y

That's because a number*symbol is considered to be distributed, no matter if the number is real or complex.
